GRAPHIC DESIGN

This project acted as more of a personal one in an attempt to celebrate some of my favourite games as well as test out some new techniques to emulate a printed look digitally.

The first here is of a character from Final Fantasy 8, I used some official art and removed the character from the main image and then simplified him down to his features using the filter gallery using the stamp effect and adjusting the effect's contrast until we had the main features, afterwarrds I cleaned it up using object selection and the pen tool/eraser.

I then used a creme/beige background to create the feel of old paper and used some noise to help the effect be more convincing. The text I wrote out then used a wave effect multiple times with different settings to create a very slight 'error' on the font to sell the idea of it being printed - to complete this effect on the text I rendered a cloud effect with some high pass and then used the filter gallery (with colours set to black and white) and used multiple layers of torn edges with ocean ripples and glass filters to create flecks of grain that would sit on the font - you can fine adjust them using the levels settings to adjust how subtle they appear. This piece is on the right here!

Furthermore I want to experiment with colour, I did a similar process of cutting a character out from a game (Persona 1 this time) and used the same effect however, this time instead of going into the filter gallery with black and white I used Purple (the game's main colour) and white which created the effect seen throughout. From there I simply collaged text and image in.

To create purple overlays on the image I used the same filter gallery effect but, adjusted the filters to halftone and stamp then adjusting the smoothness setting of the stamp to reveal more or less of the character/image features. This created the collage effect here however, The font on this poster doesn't use the same effect as the previous poster as you can see on the left here.

I eventually returned to the second piece to adjust slightly, I wanted to make the collage more elaborate by adding in more images alongside aligning the font and images to fit more consistently as opposed to being random. For the background images I’ve applied a slight grain effect with some blurring on some photos to create an ‘memory’ while maintaining this physical paper visual.

Finally to add some extras to the image I’ve taken quotes, character names and anything associated with the game and written them throughout while keeping them aligned to maintain consistency and attract attention for longer (making appropriate use of drop shadows to make them visible). This second iteration is a lot more consistent and aesthetically pleasing than the first attempt which you'll find just to the bottom left.

Additionally, on the right here I've provided a screenshot of the technique I've mentioned throughout this work, it's essentially making use of the colour palette you choose (or the default black and white palette to the side of the canvas/page in photoshop) and the applying a filter with adjustable settings to it.

Overall, I believe this project shows a willingness to experiment and see what happens as well as a creative stance to take on challenges as this was a fun but, sometimes difficult task. Furthermore I think this shows willingness to look outside the box of my current knowledge and seek out tutorials or guides on how to do things I'm completely unaware of - using the filter gallery for example - is a practical and effiecient method of learning, being able to be hands on while the technique is explained.

Below is the main effect I've used throughout which is the filter gallery - here it's just a recreation but, it's essentially aadjusting the image based on the colour palate we've choosen with different effects. You can add as many as you like and adjust them as you see fit in the panel to the right.
