Vice documentary - 5G
2021
GRAPHIC DESIGN
This project focused on trying to advertise and build around a pre-existing piece of media. In this case we choose a documentary by Vice, a large media company focused around youth creators and the world we live in. The main aim of the work was to design posters and flyers but, we could also try our hand at animation.
This project involves some work I'm very happy with and a lot I wasn't which made me reevaluaated my approach for the reamidner of the year and helped establish a more confident working enviroment.
This project was the first project conducted in the second year at Bath College and the one I met the most struggle with. I found it very hard to design certain aspects even after doing a depth of research into the project by following the documentary and researching parts I was unsure about.
One of the biggest problems that came when designing posters and flyers I felt the poster design made more sense as a flyer and vice versa. For this I adapted them on the fly during the project and managed to finish them earlier - I then went on to also try my hand at making an animation making use of after effect's camera alongside trying to make a trailer for the video.
Initially I needed to gather some ideas, most of the original ideas I had involved were assosicated with news methods - social media as well as magazine/newspaper ideas showing contraversial 'fake news' aspects of 5G. To help keep the ideas here coherent I kept an 'ideas area' that kept track of the ideas or thoughts for pieces whenever they came - theres also a major inspiration in there from another Vice documnetary on Trump which inspired me heavily for creating a poster. Alongside gathering ideas I also made sure to draw drafts and approach work with an idea in mind - you'll see these to the left and right here (excuse the poor handwriting).
Additionally, I made sure to note down the processes of creation as I came across them. This is because a lot of the techniques I went about using were from experimenting with different tools and trying new ideas out. You'll be able to check out the ideas area and the associated processes area on either side here.
There was a lot of trial and error during this period and this was the main task which took up at least two weeks to finish. During this period I did research and constantly nagged my teachers for help (I do apologise to them!) which helped me see the project through when I thought I couldn't go on. Personally my posters (the ones on the left at the top) where what I felt proudest off - they were certainly inspired by another peice Vice made but, I went about diffferent methods to establish my own presence - while it is by no means the best I've made but, it certainly stands out as something decent made during a period of struggle. The flyers on the opposite side however are something I'm not the proudest of. The flyers' covers aren't terrible but could definetly use some refinement having some consistency between them and maybe using more relevant background images. The main culprit here is the back of the flyer - while using blurred social media posts is a nice idea in theory it's execution for a background where you need to read is more a hinderance. Furthermore the images don't feel like they sit naturally on the page often feeling intrusive and just not pleasing to the eye.
Once this stage was over I moved to creating an animation and a trailer video, neither one really stands out as superb but, I've tried to use dilligence where possible and show my processes as well as recording methods. The video and animation itself don't showcase anything unique or interesting - neither are they very good. As a result I won't be showing them but, instead will show the research that went into creating this project as well as the planning and ideas for getting video footage.
Firstly to back up the creation of the flyers and posters - I mentioned I found it hard to design and to supplement did research into the topic myself outside of the documentary. This involved covering the basics of 5G and Fake news in my own words using sources to help me understand the topics - you'll see these in PDFs either side of this block of text.
I had similar problems with trying to record a video - thus I did research into 5G within the local community and found a small mass of articles pointing to potential 5G masts in the Larkhall area and the protesting against the work being done there - most notably for fear of it.
With that in mind I decided recording the masts there currently would be an idea so I planned a recording route through the area where the msts where meant to be placed. You can see more on both the research and the planning below!

Now to conclude, I know I haven't shown all work however - the work I haven't shown (both animation and video) don't feel as relevant to what I'm trying to show. The project was one I struggled with and showcases an attempt at perseverance when under pressure and deadlines - not all the work is particularlly high standard (especially including Video) and on reflection I feel like I would want to revist it in the future to give the project a more fair chance at what it could be. Additionally this was quite early into learning and getting familiar with the tools of the trade, due to the lack of strong work from this project I don't think it was a major success but, not a fail. I had completed some work to a standard I was pleased of but, others were less impressive.
